'When we had discovered that our troubled spirits found rest and attainment while we stood clasped together, giving kiss for kiss, we used to meet along the river bank of an evening. I would go out and fish until she joined me, and after that I would only pretend to fish. She thought there was nobody in the world who could throw a fly like me. One day I saw her wearing a blue sunbonnet, and after that I would never let her wear any other kind of head covering on a sunny day; it so suited the rustic grace and beauty of her. I didn’t want her to pretend to be a lady and dress like one. I wanted her to stay forever as she was, a little wild rose with the dews of morning on her. Somehow I could never imagine her growing old. That, I believe, is the case with most lovers; but regarding her I was right, for she never did. We were to be married, if you please, as soon as I came of age.
